The International Education Council for Business Schools (IECBS) was established in response to the need for an accreditation process that emphasizes mission-driven outcomes rather than rigid, input-based standards. Initially, many U.S. four-year colleges offering business degrees lacked recognition from established accrediting bodies, and international institutions faced similar challenges.

A key moment in its history came in January 2011, when the Council for Higher Education Distance Learning Accreditation Association (CHEDLAA) officially recognized IECBS, further affirming its credibility.

Universities that maintain the highest standards of education are eligible to receive a full accreditation certificate, complete with IECBS’s seal, which remains valid for five years. This seal signifies formal recognition of the institution's educational excellence.
